Firefly Aerospace Investors Explore $1.5 Billion Sale
What Is Firefly Aerospace?
Firefly Aerospace is a privately held company with more than 700 employees. The firm says its objective is to offer more affordable and reliable access to space—both for commercial and government accounts.
The company’s advantages come from its patented propulsion systems and its “advanced carbon composite structures.” It also standardizes components to cut costs while adding efficiencies and enhancing reliability.
A Hefty Valuation
Bloomberg cites unnamed sources who suggest that the company’s valuation could come in at around $1.5 billion, a hefty number but one that aligns with industry peers. The company’s investors are currently “working with an adviser on strategic options for Firefly” and believe the company could see interest from other aerospace companies or private equity firms.
Growth Mode
Bloomberg notes that one of Firefly’s key investors—PE firm AE Industrial Partners—invested $75 million in the company in 2022. A group of investors added $300 million in February of last year, which helped fuel Firefly’s valuation.
Last year, we also saw the acquisition of launch services broker and satellite developer Spaceflight Inc.
A Bright Future in a Burgeoning Field
If Firefly’s possible sale comes to fruition, a buyer would gain a company loaded with current and future deals. The firm’s Alpha rocket already has contracts with commercial satellite companies, NASA, and the U.S. Department of Defense.
Bloomberg says Firefly is also working with NASA to launch the “Blue Ghost” spacecraft on a Moon mission this year. This effort will carry scientific tools to investigate phenomena including lunar heat flow and magnetic fields.
