Lawmakers Aim to Make the Dream of Flying Cars a Reality for the Air Force
A Working Group for “Agility Prime“
The House Armed Services Committee’s innovation subcommittee, according to Defense News, crafted language in a draft of the National Defense Authorization Act that would require the Defense Department and the Air Force to form a new working group for the Agility Prime program.
Three Progress Reports Would Be Required
The working group would be required to file a series of reports on the military’s progress toward hybrid-electric or fully electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing aircraft. The first report would be due by next September, and two additional reports would be submitted in each of the following two years.
How the Military Could Use eVTOLs
Agility Prime, operated by the Air Force’s AFWERX research and development segment, was established to explore the possibility of using eVOTLs for military applications. Officials believe the vehicles could be used to move cargo, as well as for rescue operations since they are much quieter than helicopters.
Multiple Developers Working on the Technology
Multiple air taxi developers received contracts to work on the project in 2020, and the branch has conducted tests of systems made by Beta Technologies and Joby Aviation.
